Editorial Leadership
Editor-in-Chief / Publisher: Jonas Välimaa
The Editor-in-Chief / Publisher holds primary responsibility for The EU Daily’s editorial direction, publication standards, commissioning, final editorial decisions, corrections oversight, and institutional accountability.
The editorial leadership is responsible for maintaining the publication’s independence, accuracy, transparency, and compliance with its published editorial policies.
Where available, the editor’s biography and author archive should be linked from this masthead.
If ownership, publisher control, or editorial leadership changes, the relevant information should be updated promptly on this page and, where appropriate, on the publication’s Publisher and Legal Information page.
Accountable Editorial Functions
The EU Daily operates as an independent digital publication covering the European Union, European politics, public policy, business, economy, technology, society, security, international affairs, and other developments of significant public interest.
To avoid creating a misleading impression of organizational size, this masthead distinguishes accountable editorial functions from individual employees.
A desk, office, or contact function may describe a responsibility handled by one or more authorized people. It does not necessarily represent a separate full-time department or a large staff.
Editorial responsibilities may also be delegated to appropriately authorized editors, reporters, contributors, or specialists while remaining subject to the publication’s overall editorial standards and accountability framework.
Editorial Standards and Fact Checking
Office of the Editor
Responsible for editorial standards, source assessment, verification, article classification, conflict-of-interest screening, corrections, updates, editorial policy implementation, and oversight of significant published journalism.
The editorial function may also coordinate fact checking, requests for comment, attribution review, headline review, and post-publication corrections.

Authors and Contributors
Permanent editorial personnel are listed on this page when they hold a continuing accountable role within The EU Daily.
Freelance writers, guest contributors, photographers, researchers, translators, reviewers, analysts, and subject specialists are identified through individual article bylines and author pages where applicable.
Where appropriate, an author page may identify a contributor’s relevant expertise, professional background, material professional affiliations, areas of coverage, correction history, and published work.
Authors and contributors are expected to disclose material conflicts of interest and relevant relationships that could reasonably affect a reader’s assessment of their work.
The EU Daily does not create fictitious staff profiles, synthetic headshots presented as real people, inflated biographies, or honorary titles intended to create a misleading impression of organizational size, authority, or expertise.
Pseudonyms may be used only where there is a documented safety, legal, privacy, or public-interest reason and where their use has been approved by the responsible editor.
Where a pseudonym is used, The EU Daily may retain the contributor’s identity confidentially for legitimate editorial, legal, contractual, or safety purposes.
Editorial Accountability
Responsibility for published journalism ultimately rests with The EU Daily’s accountable editorial leadership.
Different editorial functions may be delegated, but delegation does not remove responsibility for maintaining appropriate standards of:
- Accuracy
- Attribution
- Verification
- Fairness
- Transparency
- Editorial independence
- Corrections
- Conflict-of-interest disclosure
- Reader accountability
Editors and contributors are expected to distinguish verified information from allegations, opinion, analysis, speculation, and unverified claims.
Commercial, technical, administrative, and partnership functions remain separate from independent editorial decision-making.
Where a material error is identified, the responsible editorial function is expected to assess the issue and apply an appropriate correction, clarification, update, editor’s note, or other editorial response.
Masthead Changes
This masthead is updated when significant editorial responsibility changes.
Former staff members or contributors are not silently presented as current members of The EU Daily.
Material changes to editorial leadership, ownership, publisher control, or accountable editorial functions should also be reflected, where appropriate, in the relevant Editorial Transparency Report and Publisher and Legal Information page.
Where an editorial role is vacant, temporarily delegated, or performed as an additional responsibility rather than by a dedicated employee, the masthead should describe the arrangement accurately rather than implying a larger organizational structure.
The purpose of this masthead is to provide readers with a clear understanding of who is responsible for The EU Daily’s journalism, which functions are accountable for specific concerns, and how readers can raise questions about published material.
